What did Akash achieve?

In October 2026, Akash submitted two reports through a company's vulnerability disclosure program. Its security team reviewed both and sent a written response. The result:

  • Both reports were acknowledged by the company.

  • Both were logged and will be considered in the company's future improvement roadmap.

  • Akash was listed on the public Security Researcher Leaderboard, which shows his name, country (India) and report count.

  • The findings related to input validation and business logic, two classic areas that every web security student learns early.

Why an "Informational" credit still matters

We want to be honest with our readers: Akash's reports were not rated Critical or High. The company's own assessment was that they were valid process and usability improvements, not exploitable vulnerabilities.

That does not make this a small win. Here is why we are proud of it:

  1. It is a real, public credit. A researcher leaderboard entry is visible to hiring managers, and it proves Akash can follow a program's rules and communicate with a professional security team.

  2. He was acknowledged on both reports. Many beginners get no reply at all, so getting a structured response is a milestone in itself.

  3. He learned how triage works. Understanding why a security team rates a finding as Informational is exactly what helps a researcher find higher-severity issues next time.

  4. He did it the legal way. Akash tested inside a published program, not an unauthorised target, which is the first rule of ethical hacking.

How did a student get here? The Versatile learning path

Akash's result did not come from luck. It came from the same hands-on approach we use in every Cyber Security batch:

StageWhat students do at Versatile
FoundationsLearn HTTP, authentication, databases and the OWASP Top 10
LabsPractise on deliberately vulnerable apps under trainer guidance
MethodologyLearn to map an app, test inputs and document findings
ReportingWrite short, reproducible reports with impact and a suggested fix
Ethics and legalityUnderstand scope, safe-harbor rules and responsible disclosure

Our batches have a maximum of 3 students, so trainers can review each student's notes and reports personally.

Further reading for aspiring researchers

  • PortSwigger Web Security Academy: Free, hands-on labs for practising legally.

  • CVSS specification (FIRST): How vulnerability severity is scored.

What can other students learn from this?

Akash's experience gives every aspiring security researcher four practical lessons:

  • Start with disclosure programs. They are open to beginners and give structured feedback.

  • Read the scope and rules first. Staying inside them keeps you legal and trusted.

  • Write clearly. A short report with exact steps gets taken seriously.

  • Treat every response as mentoring. Even an "Informational" rating tells you how defenders think.

FAQ

What is a security researcher leaderboard?

A security researcher leaderboard is a public list a company keeps of people who have reported issues through its vulnerability disclosure program. It usually shows the researcher's name, country, report count and points based on severity.

What does the "Informational" category mean?

Informational means the report is valid and useful but did not show an exploitable security impact. Companies often use it for best-practice improvements such as stronger validation or process hardening.

Can a beginner really get credited on a leaderboard?

Yes. Disclosure programs welcome careful reports from beginners. Success depends on staying in scope, writing clear reports and practising on legal labs first.

Does Versatile Technology teach ethical hacking?

Yes. Our Cyber Security course covers ethical hacking, penetration testing and security auditing, with small batches, hands-on labs and placement support.
